Cassie...Just Do What You Do
She is not a typical teen.
She spent the morning finishing up last minute details to get ready to board a plane to Salt Lake City to visit her two sisters. She reviewed with me the items that she had in her bag for both sisters and wanted to be sure that both of them were equally showered with gifts. When she finished up what she needed to do she began cheerfully working around the house to help me. She made me a CD of songs that she thought were meaningful to me so I could listen to it while she was gone. The songs she chose remind me of special times in her life, inside jokes and sweet messages that she wanted me to know. We listened to the cd while she happily worked in the kitchen to put up remaining blueberries in the freezer and I folded laundry.
When we left for the airport she continued in her same usual manner...she spoke kindly of me and to me. She persistently talks of what is most important to her; her family, her faith and her future goals. She is what pushes me to continue to be good. I can not fail her or get too tired to parent with her around. She stirs me to reach for something higher. While the girls around her pursue the praise of peers or worldly things she tells me every day how much she loves being with me...her mother! She is full of confidence in who she is and rarely allows the immaturity of others tackle her positive spirit.
While we waited for her plane, I could tell the burden of the unknown was weighing her down. She remained rather quiet and kept a keen eye open to all the people filling the seats in the gate. She began to hiccup and get a tummy ache. She began to watch the clock and she became fidgety.
When the time came to get on the plane, she turned to me and said,
"please text me when you get to the parking area so I know you made it there safely"
She is not a typical teen. She is a remarkable, classy, strong, sweet and sensible young lady.
