Perspective

Today in my drawing class I began to sketch the items sitting in the middle of the room. All of us sit in a circle around the inanimate objects in the room.  We sketch, look back to our paper and sketch and erase and look through our viewfinder, tip our heads a bit and squint our eyes... and sketch and erase and draw some more. Naturally what I see is different from what the student to my left or right can see. The person directly across from me has a very different perspective and has items in view that I don't even know exist in the montage.
So today as I casually tried to pull together my sketch I found that I was erasing more than I was drawing. I just couldn't get the angle right for the chair and the shoe. I had a great looking soda bottle, which my mean teacher complimented. But that was it. I couldn't wrap my head around the other items.
When I was about to the point of giving up, my mean teacher announced that all of us were to get up and move two places clockwise to another student's drawing. I looked to where I was going and then looked to see who would be taking over my disaster. Our assignment was to fix what was wrong in their sketch and to add our perspective to their drawing. Naturally we were to improve what we saw drawn on their paper. I sat down and was taken back at how different things looked from my new spot. We moved again two more times. It took me several minutes to even have a clue where to start because everything looked different the further I got from my seat.

I have thought about this exercise in relation to life.

Perspective changes everything.

We can't and don't understand what people are viewing in their private moments. I can add my perspective but I can't solve their problems entirely.

So next time I think I understand how to solve someone else's problems,  I hope I am reminded of the times I sit at my own drawing board of life and can't figure out how to sketch in the right angles. Certainly , I know I have to keep my eraser close by!

OR

Sometimes, I need to just start over with a new piece of paper and a freshly sharpened pencil.

A fresh start is always a good idea.
