Tuesday is trash day at our house. The trash people come early so we usually put our trash out late Monday night to ensure we don't miss their 6 a.m. pick-up.
As we opened the garage last night the cicadas on the outside of the garage we dense. They were flocking around the light and they were everywhere! Shane shut the door and I turned off the light hoping they would find another light in the neighborhood. I set the kitchen timer for an hour.
After that hour was up Shane and I had a plan. We would open the garage, and while he took the mounds of trash that we have recently collected I would use the broom to keep them away. While the numbers of cicadas had diminished there were still many many still outside the garage. Shane began his part and I immediately began swinging... a golf swing with force! The chirping and clatter of these bugs lamenting was loud. They did not like me and let me know it. It felt a bit like a real survival operation and I was not willing to lose.
Swing....buzz, whirrr and clatter
Swing....whirr, chirp and buzz
I talked trash to them while swinging.
" You don't want to mess with me!"
Swing....whine, clatter and whirrr
It lasted about five minutes, but this morning I feel the pain in my shoulder and arms...and I also feel the thrill of victory!
Outside the garage, in the light of day I can see in piles the proof of their defeat.
Ha.
