Dr. J-Dawg Doolittle

While I was in Memphis last week I traveled about with Joni as she hit her pet sitting stops at various times of the day. I enjoy driving around with her, talking and singing and mostly laughing.

One day after some stops we decided to get lunch at Subway. We parked and began walking across the parking lot to the restaurant. There in our path was a small, fluffy dog. It's owners were close by and called the dog by name to come back to them. The dog moved toward Joni instead, it's tail wagging. The owners commented on their puppy's behavior and laughed at how their pet whimpered as he responded to Joni's approach. The small fur ball dog was happy to see her. Did Joni know this dog?

Nope. She had never seen the puffy pooch before.

I have learned that Joni brings this out in many animals, dogs mostly. Like the Pied Piper who wooed the rats with his music, Joni is a dog magnet. Although,  I once heard her talk to a huge pig as she fed him stale raisin bread. He oinked steadily at her conversation as she continued with her sing-songy banter to the pig, named Hammy. He seemed almost to smile at her. Apparently she is good with pigs too.

I saw Joni get a rescue dog to come to her for a treat she held out to him. The owners had had the dog for years and they still couldn't get close to the over-anxious dog. He lived underneath the porch in their  fenced in backyard. Still the dog carefully moved toward her as she coaxed him to her. He took the treat and quickly retreated. She is the Dr. Doolittle of Collierville.

Every place we stopped during those days I was with her I saw her gift. They love Joni. Dogs are easy to read that way; jumping to her, wagging tails to her chatter and she always calls them by name. It's cute to watch. It's like doggy visiting teaching and she's goooood.

So watch out  Cesar the Dog Whisperer... J- Dawg Doolittle is in da house.
