I May Hate Football...but I LOVE this Football Story!

It isn't whether you win or loose. It's how you play the game.

This phrase makes sense in "word" ...but in "action"? How many in the world today really think they should live this way? Athletes? Politicians? Bankers? Salesmen? Coaches? College Students? You? Me?

I read a story in a "Sport's Illustrated" probably ten years ago where this young man believed that it was his way to live.

It was the final game of his senior year. His position on the high school football team was quarterback. He had had a very successful football career; so much so, that he was close to breaking the school record for highest career passing yards. Close to the end of the game it was apparent he would fall just short of the record. There was a palpable disappointment from all that attended.

Time out was called and there was a meeting on the field between the 2 opposing head coaches. When this young man went back in to complete the game there was no one there to rush him, no one tried to intercept any of the passes he was throwing. There was no one really even challenging any of the offensive team as they caught pass after pass that was thrown. It was obvious that there had been a "set-up" for him to break the school record.

The game ended. The record was broken. But when the award was given in front of the entire crowd he went to the microphone and politely refused it. He spoke of the rewards of something truly earned and spoke of the importance of respecting the person who had broken the record before him.

Where is this young man now?

I wish I knew.

I would send him to Washington D.C.
